Lithographic press
Anonymous artist
Hand-operated lithographic press of wood and metal with a star wheel. Used for printing lithographs. These prints and presses reached their peak in the second half of the 19th century. Hand presses are generally used to print a drawing made on a lithographic stone. The matrix is placed on the horizontal surface of the press, called the bed, and inked. Next, the paper on which the image will be printed is laid on the plate in a single movement. To protect the back of this sheet and ensure even pressure from the press, a board or felt and a brass sheet are laid over the paper. Then pressure is applied by operating the machine. These presses have parts to regulate the pressure and adjust it to stones of different thicknesses.
